Please Note: The following will only be applicable if the deceased was widowed.
If, after you have got the Grant of Probate, you find some more assets, or you discover that the value of an asset has changed for example, the house or some personal goods have been sold for a different figure, or it turns out that a debt you have deducted is not going to be repaid –which means the estate value will be over the personal Inheritance Tax threshold of £325,000, the estate may be able to claim a transfer of unused nil rate band which might mean that there is still no tax to pay as there may be an additional exemption of £325,000 taking the limit to £650,000.
Because you have submitted the forms, please login to the application, navigate to ‘Stage 3 > Probate & Tax Forms’. If you have not download a copy the IHT205 PDF that you printed for submission, or did not take a copy of the signed printed document, please take this opportunity to download this PDF again as you will need to resubmit this form, and not the new IHT205 PDF that will be generated if you have to generate new forms. Click on the ‘I Need to Make Amendments’ arrow in the red box in the bottom left of the screen. Navigate to the relevant areas within the Walkthrough Menu to make your changes. Once you have finished your amendments, navigate to ‘Stage 3 > Estate Summary’ and follow and complete the instructions provided by the application. Once you have completed the instructions the application will inform you whether the estate qualifies to claim a transfer of unused nil rate band.
Once you have done this, and if the estate does qualify you will need to;
- Reprint and sign copy of the IHT205 PDF that was originally used for submission. If you have a copy of the original signed form submitted you can used this.
- Download and complete a C4 ‘Corrective Account’ showing the amendments to the estate.
- Print and sign the IHT217 PDF ‘Claim to transfer unused nil rate band for excepted estates.
