Before Starting #

We recommend that you try and gather as much information as possible about the person who has died. This will make using and completing YouCanDoProbate much easier and quicker.

This would include:

  • Personal Details of the person who has died – this should include their Date of Birth, National Insurance Number.
  • Occupation of the deceased.
  • The Death Certificate.
  • The original Will and any codicils
  • The Tell Us Once Service reference number, if applicable.
  • If you have not used the Tell us Once Service you will also need driving licence number, Passport and details of any benefits or entitlements that the deceased was claiming).
  • Personal details of the Executors
  • Personal Details of the Beneficiaries.
  • A list and details, of all the deceased’s Assets & Liabilities, including any that are jointly owed.

It doesn’t matter if you cannot gather all parts of the information straight away. You can get started, and work through the walkthrough to complete what bits of information you have, and return to complete the missing information as and when you receive it. This allows you to complete probate at your own pace and when it suits you.

Don’t worry – you won’t miss anything. YouCanDoProbate will flag any vital information that is missing and will not allow you to assign a section as complete, or let you generate the application forms, without all of the necessary information being completed.
